Refusal rides on a single direction¶
A real, reproducible red-team run — not a hypothetical. It takes ~2 minutes on a laptop CPU, needs no judge model and no benchmark download, and produces the numbers below every time.
The question: how much of an aligned model's safety leans on one internal direction?
We measure refusal on a small harmful-prompt set, run SafeTune's AbliterationAttack
(Arditi et al., 2024 — refusal is mediated by a single direction), and measure again.
Run it¶
Refusal is scored judge-free — a refusal-prefix string match ("I'm sorry, but I
can't…"), the same cheap-proxy idea as advbench's GCG matching. It's not a learned
classifier, but the shift it reveals is large and unambiguous.

RESULT: refusal 88% -> 0% (ablated) -> 88% (reverted)
One matrix edit along a single direction takes this model from refusing 7 of 8 harmful requests to complying with all 8. (The one prompt it complies with even at baseline — lock-picking — is genuine, not rigged; the measurement isn't tuned to flatter the result.)

What this does and doesn't show¶
- It shows that this model's safety is fragile — concentrated on one direction that a weights-only attacker can strip cheaply. That fragility is the reason to red-team, and it's what the Evaluate pillar measures.
revert()is not a defense.runtime_ablateinstalls a reversible forward hook, sorevert()just removes it — a real adversary hands you already-ablated weights (mode="weight_orthogonalize") with no undo. It's here to show the attack is a runtime intervention, nothing more.- Real defenses live in other pillars and must be measured, not assumed: Steer re-imposes the direction at inference, Recover patches the weights back toward an aligned reference, and Harden makes the next fine-tune preserve safety in the first place. How well each one restores refusal without wrecking capability is exactly the kind of before/after number the evaluate suite exists to produce — with a proper judge and benchmarks, on a GPU.
